In 1958, Hugh O’Brian traveled to
Africa to visit Dr. Albert Schweitzer who inspired him with this thought:
“The most
important thing in education is to teach young people to think for
themselves.” These words lead Hugh
to develop the
Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership, better known as HOBY. This organization’s main purpose is to
seek out,
recognize, and reward potential leaders among America’s high school sophomores.
Every year, a
three-day seminar is held in every state to honor one O-U-T-S-T-A-N-D-I-N-G
high school sophomore from each high school in that state. At this seminar, the students are broken up
into regions, where they plan and carry out a CLEW(Community Leadership Education
Workshop). Through HOBY, young teens
are taught to think for themselves and are better prepared to teach others how
to think for themselves.
